HOMEWORK

Homework Policy

  • Homework and practice are instructional techniques that give students opportunities to deepen understanding and skills that have been taught to them.
  1.   There is one common purpose for homework which is practice!
  2.   When homework is assigned for the purpose of practice it should be structured around content with which students have a high degree of familiarity.
  • Homework should be quality not quantity work. All homework assignments should have an educational purpose behind it.

For example: if students are asked to practice the new skills they have learned in class through homework they should be fairly familiar with that skill. Practicing a skill with which a student is unfamiliar is not only inefficient, but might lead to many errors and misconceptions.

K-2 Homework Policy Procedures

3-5 Homework Policy Procedures

  • Weekly homework will be given out to students in a packet format. Brainwork should come out of their practice workbooks. Please don’t send down packets to be copied.
  • Homework  Cover sheet should be attached for every week. (Example attached).
  • Include I-Ready as part of the HW.
  • Maximum of 30 min HW for all academic subjects (Not including independent reading time).
  • Include review sheets in preparation for the tests.
  • Homework packets are  distributed Monday mornings and are collected on the following Monday mornings.
  • There must be a homework folder for each child.
  • Homework must be graded and checked for accuracy.
  • Putting a big check on the page is insufficient. Each weekly subject HW should be graded out of 10 (Use the attached rubric). A HW grade should be written on each HW assignment with comments.
  • Each subject is graded separately.
  • All homework grades must be entered every week on gradelink.
  • Homework must be announced in class, and written on the board (it will also help other subject teachers to consider the amount of HW students getting that day for other subjects before assigning their HW), and students write it in their H.W notebook
  • Homework can be assigned daily or weekly.  Whatever you policy is it should be written and clearly communicated to students and families and included in your HW policy.
  • Google Classroom will be used to post HW assignments in addition to having students copy the HW assignment from the board into their subject notebook. Due date along with all the resources should be posted. Teacher should verbally state the HW as well.  Handouts must be given out and posted on Classroom.
  • All Google Classroom posting must occur by 4pm and not later.  For example, a teacher cannot post HW for the day at 5pm.
  • Teacher is responsible to make sure all students are IN google classroom.
  • Each subject HW should be graded out of 10 (Use the attached rubric). A HW grade should be written on each HW assignment with comments. HW needs to be graded and returned to the students the next day or the same week at the MAX.
  • Each assigned HW must be graded and scores must be entered in the gradelink each week.
  • All subject teachers will post their homework policy on their webpage under the homework policy tab or on top of the homework page.
  • Assign practice homework (worksheet/Pearson Realize/Workbook)  at least two or three times a week.
  • Assign I-Ready for two days a week and on weekends minimum 15 minutes a day.
  • Math & ELA teachers: Inform students and include in your policy which days of the week you will be assigning Workbook HW and which days will be specified for I-Ready (See homework policy sample below)
  • Maximum of an hour for all academic subjects combined.
