Description
Assalam-o-Alaikum,

6th grade students and parents you can go thorough this class to get an update about what we are to do this term and what we do on daily basis in our periods of science throughout the week. The weekly homework, tests/quizzes and classroom work will be updated daily. In Sha ALLAH
Keep in touch for any questions or concerns.

( Just return to the main page of my website. On the right side you will see " Homework for 6th grade". That is where you will get updates about our daily work, homework, projects, tests and quizzes.Same for "videos".)

Review Sheet for Chapter 6
You are to answer the following questions. You should be able to use the pages I give as answers to answer the question in full sentences not phrases. On your test there will be 8 or 9 questions you will have to attempt. Now you have to prepare the following questions as you will not know which ones I will give in the test. For some questions below I gave page numbers and for some I gave the answers. For a few I even mentioned what I expect to see in the answer. Read through each questions and its answer carefully. It is the first test of 3rd Marking Period. Make it worth it! Good Luck!

1) Which gas makes up most of Earth's atmosphere?
Nitrogen is the most abundant gas, making up 78 percent of the atmosphere.
2) Define atmosphere. Describe the importance of Earth's atmosphere?
Earth's atmosphere is a thin layer of air that forms a protective covering over the planet. Earth's atmosphere is important as:
- If there was no atmosphere, days would be extremely hot and nights would be extremely cold.
-It helps maintain a balance between the amount of heat that escapes back into space.
-It also helps protect lifeforms from some of the sun's harmful rays.
3) Name the layers of Earth's atmosphere. Give 2 details about the top most layer and the layer nearest to the Earth's surface.
Layers of Earth's atmosphere are Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere.
-The layer nearest to Earth's surface is Troposphere. It extends 10 km from Earth's surface. It contains 99 percent of water vapor and 75 percent of atmospheric gases.
- The layer that is the farthest from the surface is exosphere. It is the warmest layer. It has the least molecules. Beyond this layer is space.
4) How does the space shuttle maneuver in the exosphere?
The space shuttle maneuvers in the exosphere with short bursts from rocket thrusts.
5) Where is air pressure greater-in the exosphere or in the troposphere?
Air pressure is greater in the troposphere. Earth's gravity pulls the gases towards its surface, the weight of these gases presses down on the air below. This causes the molecules to move closer to each other near the surface of the Earth.
6) While hiking in the mountains, you notice that it is harder to breathe as you climb higher. Explain.
As you are hiking in the mountains, you find it harder to breathe as you climb higher as there are fewer molecules of oxygen per liter of air in the mountains.
7) How is heat transferred through the atmosphere?
Heat is transferred through the atmosphere in three ways, i.e., radiation, convection and conduction.
8) Differentiate between conduction and radiation with one example each. You are to draw a t-chart.
Conduction: Define it . ( page 172) and give one example. (Your book has given the beach example.)
Radiation: Define it (pg. 172)  and give one example. (your book has given the beach example. Review it)
9) Draw the water cycle. Now your drawing should be worthy for me to check. You do not need to be a artist but can try your best not rush it. You are to mention what happens at each step. For example, what happens at runoff, how water gets evaporated through sunlight and heat, how water vapors condense to cause condensation, how precipitation occurs and the cycle continues non-stop.
10) Contrast the atmospheres of Earth and Mar.
Earth's atmosphere is more denser, so it holds more of the Sun's heat. Read pg. 174
11)What is the difference between sea breeze and land breeze.
Sea breezes blow from large bodies of water toward land, while land breezes blow from land toward water.
12) How does a sea breeze blow?
Read pg. 179. During the day, solar radiation warms the land more than water by conduction, becomes less dense, and is replaced by cooler, denser air moving moving inland from the ocean. Thus wind blows from the sea toward the land.
13) Explain how Coriolis effect influences winds.
Air masses in the northern hemisphere are deflected to the right, while those in the southern hemisphere are deflected to the left.
14) What is doldrums? Why is there little rain and much afternoon rain occur in the doldrums?
pg. 176 read The last paragraph on the page. Windless and rainy zone near the equator is known as doldrums. As air at the equator is warmed it is lifted and cooled. This causes clouds and precipitation most afternoons.
15) Define jet streams. Explain how jet pilots take advantage of them.
pg. 178 Read "winds in the upper troposphere".
High-altitudes belts of wind or narrow belts of strong winds that blow near the top of the troposphere is known as jet streams.Jet streams help move storms across the country.
Jet pilots take advantage of the jet streams. When flying eastward, planes save time and fuel. Going west, planes fly at different altitudes to avoid the jet streams.

Assignment

Boys and girls,

-Note: You have a project due this Thursday, December 10, 2015. I will not accept projects after this. If you have any questions, you are to ask me or email me by Wednesday. I will give you a short template/ sample below of how to setup your project. Be creative.
-Agenda: The project is to be about one Muslim scientist and his/her work and contribution towards Science. The agenda of this project is to acknowledge the great work done by Muslims. We Muslims are strong in every field of life but history tends to rub our works and efforts as if we did not exist. That is why I want you to scratch history to know how Muslims proved to be hardworking and worthy of being remembered.
-Project outline: The project should be of at least 2 pages. You are to type or write the project. Print is preferred. Write your project in a way that you can be able to present your research. It is basically going to be a biography of a Muslim scientist.

Some scientists you can search more about through this link. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Muslim_scientists

Sample:

Project Title: "Muslim Scientists and their Contribution to Science
Name of scientist:
Born:
Birthplace:
Early life:

( Here talk about the personal background of the scientist., his/her life, education and life before fame or being a scientist)

Contribution to Science or any particular field/s in Science:

(Here talk about the work of the scientist, any books published, any organization joined, any highlighting point of his.her life that indicate him/her to be hardworking, talk about any awards or certifications awarded because of their contribution towards science)
